Review: Shiso Pepsi

by Sarah Joy Albrecht | June 26th, 2009

June 25, 2005, Japan – Tasting Shiso Pepsi for the first time.

Pepsi authentically bottled the flavor of shiso – but does it make for a tasty beverage?

Note: While Shiso Pepsi has the citrus-like background notes of Pepsi, there isn’t a hint of cola flavor. Sweetened Shiso + Bitter Lime/Citrus.

  1. Wow, that looks like a big bottle for Japan! When I lived there back in 91-93 soda was sold in 200ml cans… that looks at least 500ml.

  2. Being as it was the last thing I drank before bed, the aftertaste was the first thing I woke up with this morning.

If I were to smell Shiso Pepsi right now, I’d probably puke.

I wonder if native Japanese consumers actually enjoy the taste?!

  3. Shiso Pepsi would mix well with alcohol.

It tastes a bit like a bubbly drink mixer without the booze to cut the sweetness.

Shiso Pepsi on the rocks, with some light rum, a squirt of lime, garnished with a shiso leaf would probably make for a nice, more savory mojito.
